Celeste Lamb

September 18, 1933 — January 31, 2010

Celeste Winne Lamb, 76, of Sholtz Rd., Oneida, NY, passed away Sunday, January 31, 2010 at Community Memorial Hospital, Hamilton, NY.
Celeste was born September 18, 1933 in Amityville, NY, a daughter of William G. and Marion Lilley Winne. She grew up in Gilbertsville and graduated from Gilbertsville Central School, and then went on and received her R.N. degree from the Vassar School of Nursing in Poughkeepsie, NY. Celeste lived in Vernon, NY for many years before moving to Oneida. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Walter C. Lamb in 1975. She was an independent and strong woman who loved her family. Celeste was an avid reader, loved crossword puzzles, collectables of all kinds, mowing her lawn, and was a Syracuse Orangemen and New England Patriots fan.
Celeste, who was also known as “Winnie”, had a great passion for nursing. She worked for Rome Developmental Center for 31 years, first at the Rome Developmental Center, and then at the Herkimer County DDSO community residences, where she devoted her skills to the care of developmentally disabled children and adults, until her retirement in 1989. Following that, Celeste continued to work as a nursing supervisor and instructor, teaching classes and working for Family Home Care until she retired in 2008.
Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Denise and Arnie Rollins of Lebanon, NY; Kathleen and Kenneth Nunes of Newbury, NH; her grandchildren, Tami (Rollins) and John Furst of Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY; Heath and Trish Rollins of Medway, MA; Tadd and Jenn Rollins of Bouckville, NY; Rachel M. and Megan K. Nunes, both of Newbury, NH; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Brenda and Bob Toomath of Hamilton, NY; Darla and Stan Congden of Canastota, NY; and seven (soon to be eight) great-grandchildren who affectionately called her “GiGi”.
In keeping with Celeste’s final wish and her devotion to nursing and educating others, her body was donated to SUNY Upstate Medical University so that she may continue to help others learn.
A celebration of her life and the planting of a Living Memorial Tree will be held on June 26, 2010 at the home of her daughter, Denise, at a time to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, her family has requested donations be made to Heritage Farm, Route 46, Bouckville, NY 13310; Hospice and Palliative Care, 4277 Middle Settlement Rd., New Hartford, NY 13413; or the Community Memorial Hospital Foundation, 150 Broad St., Hamilton, NY 13346.
