Clayton Irving (Irv) Crandall, 89, passed away on August 23, 2011 at his home in Brookfield, NY where he had been lovingly cared for by his family during a long fight with cancer.
He was born on March 7, 1922 in Clayville, NY, to Lysle and Mildred North Crandall. He graduated from Brookfield High School in 1940 and enlisted in the U.S. Army on December 3, 1941. He was assigned to the European Theater, 9th Air Force where he was sent overseas in 1942 and saw action in England, France, Belgium and Germany. He was honorably discharged on October 1, 1945. In 1946, he married Helen Mulligan in Brookfield, where they spent 65+ years together. He was employed at Brookfield Central School where he retired after 26 years of service.
Irv was active in the community and held memberships in the Brookfield Fire Department, the American Legion, the Beaver Valley Rod and Gun Club, The First Baptist Church of Brookfield and the Brookfield Cemetery Association. He was an avid outdoorsman for all seasons, up until the age of 88, spending many enjoyable hours at the cabin with his hunting buddies.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; a son, Barry of Oriskany Falls; three daughters, Jeanne (Jim) Kellogg of North Brookfield; Vicki (Ron) Whitford of Brookfield; and Marilyn Crandall of Hamilton. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, all of whom spent time with him this summer and eight great-grandchildren. He also leaves many friends and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, David Crandall; his sister, Ellen Carpenter and her son, Charlie; and a son-in-law, Darrell Case.
Memorial services will be held at 3pm on Saturday, August 27, 2011 from the First Baptist Church, Brookfield, followed by Interment with military honors in the Brookfield Cemetery.
Friends are invited to call at the church on Saturday from 1 to 3 pm prior to the service.
