Dorothy B. Cowen, 93, long time resident of Waterville, NY and Jensen Beach, FL died on April 6, 2012 at the Highlands in Pittsford, NY

She was born in Oriskany Falls July 9, 1918, daughter of Henry and Edith (Smith) Biederman and granddaughter of Adelbert and Sarah (Starkweather) Smith of Augusta, NY and Peter and Margaret (Held) Biederman, also of Augusta. Dorothy graduated from Ilion High School and Oneonta State Teachers College. She married William H. Cowen on November 22, 1947. Dorothy began her career teaching in a one-room school house near Waterville. She taught many years in the Waterville Central School system, retiring in 1975.

Dorothy will be remembered as a friend, neighbor and teacher. She was a member of the Waterville Women’s Club for many years and an advocate for her community and the Methodist Church. She and Bill had an intense love of travel, both at home in Central New York and around the world. She and Bill especially enjoyed their summer evening “rides” on the country roads surrounding Waterville. In retirement they spent winters in their beloved Nettles Island Community on the East Coast of Florida.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband William H. Cowen and brother Henry H. Biederman. She leaves a son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Judy Cowen of Penfield, NY and granddaughters Sarah Cowen of Hoboken, NJ and Megan Cowen of New Woodstock, NY; and a special niece and family, Susan and Joseph Albanese of Utica, NY along with their children Jennifer, Joseph, Jr., Natalie and Stephanie. She was also predeceased by her great-nephew Paul Albanese.

Funeral services will be held Saturday April 14, 2012 at 10:00 AM from the Kloster-Northrop & Bentz Funeral Home, 210 East Main St, Waterville, NY. Interment will follow in Crown Hill Memorial Park. Friends and family are invited to call on Friday from 4 to 7 PM at the funeral home.
Memorials may be directed to the Waterville United Methodist Church.
