Ebenezer "Ebb" Burt Belfield, 90, of Sangerfield, NY, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 23, 2012, surrounded by his family.
Born on the family farm in Bridgewater, NY, on March 14, 1922, to Frank and Estelle Davis Belfield, Ebb was the eldest of seven children, and attended Bridgewater Central School. Ebb's love and responsibility to his country came at an early age and he enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII, where he served in the European Theater as a Sergeant whose duties included campaigns in Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland.
On November 14, 1945, he was wed to Theresa Finley at Our Lady's Elden, Liverpool, England, a union that lasted over 67 years. Ebb and Theresa settled in the Waterville area where they lived for 65 years.
After the war, Ebb, like many other vets coming home, found there was a shortage of housing and jobs. Working as a long haul cattle transport for Barrett Welch, of New Berlin, NY, and then as a farm hand for Bob Dye, Bridgewater, NY. Ebb was able to provide housing for his family while still working the night shifts at McCoy Iron Works, Clayville Papermill, and Savage Arms. In 1948, he started his own septic and excavating business part-time, then with his and Theresa's hard work made it possible to be a full time family business. Ebb was well known for his work ethic, loyalty to his customers, and knowledge of their family's ancestry from all parts of Oneida and Madison counties. He had an uncanny ability to know exactly how to excavate the land and decide the amount of materials necessary to complete a job just by observing the lay of the land.
Ebb was a communicant of St. Bernard's Roman Catholic Church in Waterville, and ushered at the 8:00 mass for over 25 years. He was a member of American Legion Post #92 in Sangerfield, NY.
Ebenezer is survived by three of his four children and their spouses, Liz (Patrick) Young, New Hartford, Patricia Hill, Waterville, and Jim (Lisa) Belfield, Waterville. He sadly leaves behind ten grandchildren, Lilly (Stockbridge) Rockwell, Patrick Stockbridge, Jamie Hill, James Stockbridge, Christopher Green, Rachael (Hill) Coye, Andrea (Green) Monoz, Ashley (Belfield) Carahar, Joshua Belfield and Rebecca Belfield; 17 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great granddaughter.
