1928 Grace 2014

Grace Knickerbocker

September 13, 1928 — February 21, 2014

Grace M. Knickerbocker, 85, of South Main Street, Earlville and recently Oak Drive, Canastota, passed away suddenly on Friday, February 21, 2014. She was born September 13, 1928 in Pharsalia, a daughter of Leon J. and Rebecca Drew Parker. On June 6, 1948, Robert Knickerbocker and Grace M Parker were married in New Berlin, New York and their loving union spanned 64 years until Bob predeceased her on February 2, 2013. Grace and Bob spent those years together in New Berlin, Columbus, Glenfield and Earlville, New York.
Graduating from Cincinnatus High School, Grace attended and received her business degree from the Central City Business Institute in Syracuse. Her employment included working for Northwestern Mutual, Wescar, South Lewis School System, and the Sherburne-Earlville School District. She and Bob were both members at one time of the Columbus Community Church, the Glenfield Methodist Church, and the Earlville United Methodist Church. Together they were always active in their churches assisting as much as possible with church dinners, church maintenance, joint youth leadership, choir directing, teaching sunday and bible school and in other church leadership positions. Very recently Grace had also been attending the United Church of Canastota while living there.
She is survived by her children, Roberta (Bobbie) and Thomas Gurtowski of Seattle, WA; Sue and Grant Cross of Smyrna; and Sharon and Roland Gustin Jr. of Canastota; grandchildren, Melissa and Joe Irons of Shoreline, WA; Robert and Vicki Cross of Davenport, NY; Kimberly and Menelik Zewdu of Renton, WA; Elizabeth and Terry Wormuth, Stephanie and Bill Gustin, Nicole Allen and Cory and Michelle Gustin, all of Canastota; and great-grandchildren, Venetia, Samaria, Emily, Jacob, Natalie and Bella. She was predeceased by a sister, Phyllis Parker and a brother, Clarence Parker.
Grace had a special fondness for music and loved to play piano and go to musicals and concerts; she passed this love of music onto her children and grandchildren. Her craft talents were especially evident in the Christmas decorations she made and shared with family and friends. And with Bob's love for woodwork, they worked together to lovingly make such special ornaments; many were given out by groups of young musicians to seniors every holiday season.
People were easily drawn to Grace with her kindness, willingness to help, and sense of humor. Her family will remember her as well for her unwavering love of family and her strength and devotion to her husband, Bob, especially in his later years of waning health. She was his loving steadfast caretaker. Solace is taken in the knowledge they are together again.
