James Schofield

September 30, 1943 — December 23, 2013

James (Jim) Lincoln Schofield, of Morrisville, NY died peacefully in his beloved stone home on December 23, 2013 at the age of 70. He was born in Brooklyn, NY to the late Mary Fannon Schofield and James Lincoln Schofield. Jim attended St. Mary’s High School in Manhasset, NY before completing his undergraduate education at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University followed by graduate school in philosophy at Syracuse University and a J.D. at Syracuse University Law School.

Jim’s love of teaching and commitment to Onondaga Community College began when he started teaching philosophy while the campus was located in downtown Syracuse. Over the years, he chaired the Social Sciences Department, served as a long-time delegate to the faculty council, and was active as a union representative. Jim was a co-founder of ReconsiDer. As an active member of the Valley Ice Hockey community, he enjoyed many years of coaching and watching his children play hockey. Since his retirement he continued to teach at OCC part-time. In recent years he turned his property into Peaceful Acres, a small organic farm. He continued to enjoy his lifelong passions of boating, voracious reading, folk and rock music, and spending time with family and friends.

Jim is survived by two children: Lincoln of Brooklyn, NY and Casey (Simon) of Saratoga Springs, NY; as well as 4 sisters - Julie Schofield of West Coxsackie, NY; Francine Nietubicz of Cape May, NJ; Kathy Zdeb of Albany, NY; and Muriel Zimmer of Falmouth, Nova Scotia, and many beloved nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his former wife and friend, Anne Foley Schofield.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions be made to the Onondaga Community College Foundation to help establish a scholarship fund in Jim’s memory: OCC Foundation, 4585 W. Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse, NY 13215.
