Jean Shapley Grant, 97, of Hamilton, NY, formerly of Liberty, NY, passed away Monday, March 28, 2011 at the Community Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility, Hamilton.
She was born August 24, 1913 in Earlville, NY, a daughter of Harold and Elva Booth Shapley. Jean graduated from Earlville High School in 1935. She continued her education at SUNY, Cortland, the University of Buffalo, and received her Masters Degree in Education at NYU. Jean was a kindergarten and elementary school teacher for 33 years in Earlville, Ramapo, Suffern, Roscoe and then Liberty, NY until her retirement in 1968. In 1960, Jean married Karl Grant who predeceased her on November 11, 1993.
Jean was a member of the Park United Methodist Church in Hamilton, and NYS Retired Teachers Assoc. She was a dedicated volunteer for many years delivering Meals on Wheels, helping the sick, shut-ins and rehabilitation patients. She was also active in the First Baptist Church in Earlville. Among her favorite interests were skiing, swimming, playing tennis and outdoor activities. She loved to travel and visited much of Europe and the United States.
Surviving are her sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Neil Trueworthy of Hamilton; two step-daughters, Mary (Jim) Hooper of Leesburg, FL and Jacqueline Lewis of PA; six step-grandchildren, thirteen step-great-grandchildren; a niece, Linda Trueworthy (Eddie Ray) of Hamilton; nephew, Neil Trueworthy, Jr. of Verona; grandnieces, Nicole, Monica and Hannah Penny, all of Hamilton.
Memorial Services will be held at 1pm Monday, April 4, 2011 from the Park United Methodist Church, 17 Broad St., Hamilton.
Interment in the Earlville Cemetery will be made at a later date.
There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, her family has request that contributions in her memory be made to the Park United Methodist Church, PO Box 54, Hamilton, NY 13346; or to the First Baptist Church, 9 West Main St., Earlville, NY 13332.
