John Mastroe

July 5, 1944 — November 19, 2014

John Russell (Jack) Mastroe, 70, of Eaton NY and Palm Coast, FL, loving brother, uncle, and friend died suddenly at his camp in Eaton on Wednesday November 19, 2014. John was pre-deceased by his parents, Jack A. and Mary Louise (Fishbaugh) Mastroe and is survived by his siblings Patricia Anne (Carl) Giambelluca, Vass, N.C., Faith (Mike) Tarby, Elmira, N.Y., Marilou (Will) Pierce, Fayetteville, N.Y., Tom (Carol) Mastroe, Johnson City, N.Y. and Bill (Alison) Mastroe, Homer, N.Y. and many nieces and nephews whom he took great pride in and in return loved him dearly.
Jack grew up in Endicott, NY and graduated from Union Endicott High School in 1962, received his B.S. from Indiana State University, his M.S. from SUNY Cortland and earned many graduate hours at Ohio State, Syracuse University, SUNY Cortland and SUNY at Utica/Rome and Long Island University. His career spanned 34 years teaching in the Utica School System serving as department head of Social Studies for five years at J.F.K. and ten years as department head of Social Studies at Proctor. Students also knew him as an instructor of scuba diving and Red Cross life saving at Utica College in addition to multiple coaching positions for swim programs.
After retiring he volunteered at the Art Park in Cazanovia and the swim program for those with special needs at Colgate University. He volunteered at the Friendship Inn of Saint Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Morrisville where he was a parishioner. When at his winter home in Palm Coast, FL he belonged to Elizabeth Anne Seton Parish.
Jack was an avid tennis player and enjoyed playing with friends and family over the years. His several dogs brought him many hours of companionship throughout his life.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Noon on Monday, November 24, 2014 from St. Joan of Arc Church, Brookside Dr., Morrisville, NY, followed by interment in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Hamilton, NY.
Friends are invited to call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 31 Cedar St., Morrisville, NY on Monday from 9:30 to 11:30 am.
The family will provide flowers and in lieu of flowers a donation can be made to The Friendship Inn at St Joan of Arc Church, PO Box 1087, Morrisville, NY or to the SPCA through spcaflorida.org .
