John W. Collins, 92, lifelong Sherburne resident, passed away Saturday, December 26, 2020 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown.
He was born on February 27, 1928 in Sherburne, a son of William J. and Georgia Edna Wilkinson Collins. He was a graduate of Sherburne High School and the Watson School of Engineering at Binghamton University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served from 1954 until his honorable discharge in 1956. On November 6, 1954, John married Alta Louise Ellis in Sherburne, a loving union of over 62 years when she predeceased him on January 24, 2017. John was a quality engineer for Unison in Norwich until retiring.
John was a communicant of St. Malachy’s Church in Sherburne. He was a member of the American Legion Post #876 in Sherburne.
Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, David and Janet Collins of Sherburne; son-in-law, Steve Jenne of FL; a sister, Eva Neal of Sherburne; grandchildren Danyel (Brody) O’Farrell of VA; Jay Collins of Norwich; Travis Collins and Cody (Lauren) Collins, all of FL; great-grandchildren, Brayden, Aislyn and Lorelai. Also surviving are his in-laws, Carol and Eldaige St. Peter of Sherburne and Ken Ellis of Clark Mills. He was predeceased by a son, Paul Collins in 2014; a daughter, Karin C. Jenne in 2011; two brothers, George and Charles Collins; two infant brothers, Kenneth and Leeiner; and two sisters, Wilma Collins and Anna Kingsbury.
Graveside services with military honors will be held in the Sherburne Quarter Cemetery at a later date to be announced.
