Lynn Newland

Lynn C. Newland, 72, of Griffith Rd., West Winfield, NY, passed away Thursday, September 13, 2012 at his home.
He was born January 2, 1940 in Wayne, IN, a son of John and Elsie Soyring Newland and received his early education in local schools. He was a graduate of Youngstown State in Ohio where he received BA degrees in English and Political Science. He had also studied Linguistics in Mexico City for one year. Lynn was in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1964, serving in Korea and was a correspondent for Stars and Stripes. From 1964 to 1968, he was in the U.S. Army Reserve Air Corps. His lifelong passion was his career in journalism. He had worked for the Warren Newspaper in Ohio; the Associated Press in Indianapolis, IN, Manhattan, India, Vietnam, Cambodia, Sri Lanka and Indonesia; UPI in Hong Kong; SUNY, Amsterdam in public relations; The Mountain Eagle, Hunter, NY; the Jeffersonia Concord in Ohio; the Amsterdam Recorder; the Sarasota Independent; the Asian Desk at UPI; and the York Dispatch, York, PA until his retirement. He began his second career as sheep rancher on his Sugar Creek Farm in Yuba, WI, and continued it when he relocated to West Winfield. He had also been a courier for NBT Bank and worked at Dream Park in Cooperstown following his retirement. On March 3, 1984, Lynn married Kathleen A. Paige in Roxbury, NY.
Surviving are his wife, Kathleen; step-children, Peter and Effie Ahl of Buffalo; Jeremy Ahl of Latham, NY; David Ahl and Katie Kelleher of Colonie, NY; a granddaughter, Gabrielle Ahl; an aunt, Hilda Nikkila of Canton, OH; cousins, Molly Nikkila of Canton, OH; Jane and Mark Sterling of WA.
Memorial Services will be held at 1pm Wednesday, September 19, 2012 from St. James Episcopal Church, 9 Williams St., Clinton, NY.
There are no calling hours and interment will be at the convenience of the family.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, or to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
