1935 Maria 2014

Maria Graniti

August 12, 1935 — March 27, 2014

Maria Rose (LaCamera) Graniti, 78, of Rutger St., Utica, NY, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2014 at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare.
Maria was born on August 12, 1935 in Bagheria, Sicily, a daughter of Serafino and Rose Tornatore LaCamera. On June 20, 1959, she was united in marriage to Dominick Graniti in Bagheria. They came to the United States in 1962, settling in the Utica area. Maria was a seamstress who worked for Joseph & Feiss in Utica, the Mademoiselle Bridal Shop in Utica, and Pickers Fashions in Utica and New Hartford until her retirement. She was of the Catholic faith.
Maria was a woman of few words, but she was well known for her endearing smile that said it all. She was devoted to her beloved family who were her pride and joy. Like many Italian mothers, she was an amazing cook whose family and friends always enjoyed sitting at her table for a wonderful meal. Her signature dish of macaroni and peas went to every gathering, but was never able to be duplicated by anyone else and unfortunately, her recipe is gone with her, along with so many of her other special dishes. Maria was also a generous and giving person who was always there to help her family and friends when needed.
Surviving are Dominick, her husband of 54 years; a son and daughter-in-law, Vincent and Lynn Graniti of Utica; a sister, Piata Passarallo and a brother, Giovanni LaCamera, both of Bagheria, Sicily; a sister-in-law, Frances Chiarello of Newport News, VA; her grandchildren, Nicole Graniti and Bryan Austin of Utica; and Noelle Graniti of Utica; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A sister, Antoinette Leocardi, predeceased her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1pm Monday, March 31, 2014 from St. Mary of Carmel Church, 648 Jay St., Utica.
Maria’s family will receive friends at the church following the Mass.
Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Utica.
Her family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of AC3 East Wing as well as Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., for the wonderful care given to her.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 25 Broad St., Hamilton, NY.
