Marjorie Loftus Barnes, age 92, formerly of Waterville, NY, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed to her eternal rest on Monday, December 29, 2014, at the Brandon Oaks Retirement Community in Roanoke, Virginia.
Marjorie was born March 7, 1922, in Utica, New York, the daughter of James Patrick and Mary Haney Loftus. At an early age, Marjorie went to live with her paternal grandparents, William and Mary Loftus, and was raised by them and her two aunts, Elizabeth Loftus and Mrs. Alice Jordan. She attended schools in Deansboro and Waterville, New York before graduating from Waterville High School in 1940 and was trained as a legal secretary. On March 16, 1946, she was united in marriage to LTJG Willis C. Barnes USN of Utica, New York – a devoted union of 62 years until his death in 2008. Marjorie was a gifted hostess for all occasions, a dedicated volunteer with Navy Relief, an enthusiastic and prolific master of needlework, and an ace bridge player.
Marjorie is survived by her daughter, Barbara B. Smith of Roanoke, Virginia; son Thomas R. Barnes of Trumbull, Connecticut, and daughter in-law Lynne; son David L. Barnes of Bethesda, Maryland and daughter-in-law Amy; six grandsons and their wives and six great-grandchildren.
The Barnes family would like to extend their deep appreciation to the Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia, and to the staff at Brandon Oaks Retirement Community for their superb care of Mrs. Barnes.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 am Saturday, January 3, 2015, at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home (Kloster & Northrup Memorial Chapel), 210 E. Main St., Waterville, NY.
Interment in St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Waterville, will be held in the spring.
Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday from 6-8 p.m.
