Mary W. Deland, 83, formerly of Vernon, New Berlin and Hamilton, NY, passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at Wilson Regional Medical Center, Johnson City, NY.
She was born March 14, 1928 in Eaton, a daughter of Walter and Amy Fletcher Westcott and was a graduate of Georgetown High School. On June 1, 1947, Mary married Gordon W. Deland in West Eaton. Theirs was a loving union of 61 years until he predeceased her on January 7, 2009. Mary was the Postmaster in West Eaton from July 1967 until November 1982, and then in Vernon until her retirement in June 1990.
Mary was a member of the West Eaton Baptist Church. She was a devout Christian whose faith was an integral part of her life. An accomplished quilter, she made and donated quilts to Project Linus, an organization that provides comfort, warmth and security to seriously ill children through the gift of blankets. She was also a member of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States.
Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Steven Kelly of Berkshire; Leona and Franklin LeFevre of Sacramento, CA; Rosemary and Kenneth Grabowski of South Otselic; a son and daughter-in-law, Gordon and Sari Deland of Farmers Branch, TX; a sister, Thirza Suits of Morrisville; a brother, Douglas Westcott of NC; 11 grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter; two sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Leon and Robert Westcott, and a sister, Laura Roland.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2pm, Saturday, July 23, 2011 from the First Baptist Church, South Otselic.
Interment will be in Prospect Point Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
There will be no calling hours.
