1921 Nora 2014

Nora Purdy

May 24, 1921 — December 4, 2014

Nora (nee Foudy) Purdy, 93, formerly of Hamilton, died peacefully at Crouse Community Center in Morrisville on December 4, 2014.
Nora was born on May 24, 1921 in Inagh, County Clare, Ireland. She was the second of fifteen children born to the late John and Nora Foudy. Nora completed her education at the Cloonaanaha National School in County Clare and St. Martha’s College in Navan, County Meath. After pursuing a nursing course in England, Nora emigrated to the United States, arriving in New York harbor onboard the S.S. Marine Marlin on December 5, 1947. She initially worked as a nanny before securing employment at Shrafft’s as a hostess. It was there that she met a soldier, Douglas Purdy, on leave from nearby Ft. Dix, NJ. Nora and Doug were married at St. Mary’s Church in Hamilton on November 3, 1951. Nora remained a communicant of St. Mary’s and was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society.
In addition to her devoted husband, Nora is survived by her loving children; John and Dineen Purdy of Westerville, OH; Mary Purdy and Pat Milo of Albany, NY; cherished granddaughters, Kristy L. Purdy of Chicago, IL; and Kimberly A. Purdy of Westerville, OH; a brother, Reverend Thomas Foudy of Pompano Beach, FL; sisters, Ellen Shannon and Brigid Hegarty of Inagh, County Clare; Nancy McIlvar of Sicdup, Kent; sister-in-law, Rose Foudy of Longford, County Longford, Ireland, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Nora worked as a waitress at Colgate Inn and the Seven Oaks Clubhouse. She was a retail clerk at McLaughlin's in Hamilton.
Nora’s sociability and outgoing nature led to a lifetime of deep and substantive relationships. These friendships celebrated with her during joyous times, supported her during periods of infirmity and sustained her independence well into her 90th year. Nora’s indomitable spirit inspired others and she cultivated a community of wonderful neighbors and friends, each of whom became an extension of her own family, all of whom she showered with love. Nora was a talented homemaker who loved to entertain, sew, and bake for others.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to these neighbors and friends who supported Nora and Doug in countless ways. We also wish to recognize the exceptional care Nora received during the last year of her life at the Skilled Nursing Facility of Community Memorial Hospital, and at Crouse Community Center.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 am Tuesday, December 9, 2014 from St. Mary’s Church, 16 Wylie St., Hamilton, followed by interment in the Graham Cemetery, Hubbardsville, NY.
Friends are invited to call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 25 Broad St., Hamilton on Monday from 6-8pm.
