1932 Phyllis 2021

Phyllis M. Payne

February 24, 1932 — July 8, 2021

Phyllis M. Payne of Waterville, NY, passed away unexpectedly on July 8, 2021 at Faxton-St. Luke’s Hospital, with her loving family by her side.
A daughter of Clair Walker and Mildred Walley Walker, Phyllis was born the youngest of five on February 24, 1932 in the family homestead along the Delaware River, which is now submerged below the Cannonsville Reservoir and as she often reminded us, is providing exceptional drinking water to the city of New York. Phyllis spent her pre-teen years in Olean, NY, and then moved to Buffalo, where she graduated from Kenmore High.
She was working in the office at Scintilla in Sidney, NY when she was swept off her feet by a handsome Marine. On July 13th, 1951, she married the love of her life, Bruce L. Payne. They were a perfect pair and enjoyed many years together traveling (North Myrtle Beach and Maine were favorite spots), hiking in the Adirondacks, and spending family time at their camps on Oxbow Lake and Soft Maple Reservoir. They celebrated their 59th anniversary before Bruce predeceased her on July 18, 2010.
After raising their children, Phyllis returned to work at Sherwood-Davis & Geck in Oriskany Falls and retired in 1998, just shy of 20 years’ service.
Phyllis was an active member of the community, participating in Waterville Women’s Club and the Waterville Bowling League. She was a Girl-Scout leader and she taught religion classes at First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed basket-weaving, throwing pottery and taking watercolor classes with W. Ralph Murray at Kirkland Art Center. In her later years, she volunteered at the Harding Nursing Home, belonged to the Waterville Senior Citizens group, played cards at the Waterville Library, and enjoyed the company of her many friends and traveling with her children. Spending time with her family was her greatest joy.
Phyllis was an animated storyteller and a great listener. She was fun-loving, game for anything, easy to laugh, and incredibly compassionate. She had the kindest of hearts. She was a wonderful friend and she will be intensely missed by many, most especially her children: Sally Vetter of Clinton; Ken and Cheryl Payne of Schuyler; Carol Payne and Loren Gualtieri of Rio Rancho, NM; her grandchildren, Katherine Vetter (Travis Kahikina) of Camillus; Jessica Vetter (Thomas Dilworth) of Utica; Erin (Louis) Denato Jr. of Schuyler; Matthew (Stephanie) Payne of Frankfort; Lucas Payne of Clinton; Adam (Stacey) Payne of New Hartford; Lauren (Steve) Kilmartin of Boston Lake; Russell Suppa of Halfmoon; her great-grandchildren; and her cousin, Sister Marlene Butler GNSH of Philadelphia, PA. Phyllis was predeceased by her brothers, Wayne, Richard, William and Douglas Walker.
A private service to honor Phyllis’ life will be held at a future date with interment in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney, NY.
