Stephen P. Carpenter, 59, of Sholtz Rd., Sherrill, NY, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at his home.
He was born May 25, 1957 in Hamilton, NY a son of the late John F. Carpenter, Sr. and Barbara Merkt Carpenter. He was a 1975 graduate of Hamilton Central School where he played ice hockey, football and baseball. He married Mary Anne Jeffrey on April 29, 1978 at St. Malachy’s Church in Sherburne. Steve was a Deputy for Chenango County Sheriff’s Office at one time. He became a corrections officer for the New York State Department of Corrections where he worked at the Mohawk Correctional Facility until retiring as a Sergeant. He enjoyed hunting and was a member of the NRA. He loved all sports and had coached both of his children in ice hockey with the Rome Hockey Association. He was also a Civil War enthusiast.
Surviving are his mother, Barbara of Earlville; his former wife, Mary Anne, with whom he had a special relationship; his children, Megan Carpenter and Bruce Warcup of Lee Center; Mark and Toni Carpenter of Earlville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Randy J. and Cathi Carpenter, John C. and Rebecca Carpenter, all of Earlville, and Jeffrey S. Carpenter of Hamilton; an aunt, Jacqueline Loop of Earlville; grandchildren, Alexander Campbell and Colin Carpenter; two nieces, a nephew and several cousins. He was predeceased by his father, John; an infant brother, John F. Carpenter, Jr.; two uncles, Donald and Richard Merkt; an aunt, Mary Carpenter Shaw; a nephew, Eric Carpenter; and a niece, Christi Carpenter.
Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Stephen’s life at 2pm on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at the home on Mark and Toni Carpenter, 735 County Route 14, Earlville, NY.
Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Hamilton, NY.
