Thomas Snyder

December 28, 1926 — July 30, 2011

Thomas K. Snyder, 84, formerly of W. Bacon St., Waterville, NY, passed away Saturday, July 30, 2011 at the Katherine Luther Residential Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Inc., Clinton, NY.
He was born December 28, 1926 in Cortland, NY a son of Gilbert and Marian Kernan Snyder and was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Cortland. Thomas joined the U.S. Army and proudly served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during WWII. On November 19, 1949, he married Patricia Moses in Groton, NY. She predeceased him on March 12, 1994. Tom was a meat cutter for the Grand Union in Waterville, the Jolly Butcher in Clinton, and Garrett’s Food King in Waterville until his retirement. He was an avid NY Giants and Notre Dame fan and he loved playing golf. He truly enjoyed the outdoors and especially the Adirondack Mountains.
Tom was a communicant of St. Bernard’s Church in Waterville. A civic-minded member of his community, he had served as the Mayor of Waterville, was a member of the Waterville Lions Club and the Waterville Rotary Club.
Surviving are his children, Rebecca Wheeler, Harrisburg, PA; Timothy Snyder, Sangerfield, NY; Thomas and Laurie Snyder, Homer, NY; Tressa and Dwayne Schieferstine, Vernon, NY; five grandchildren, Katherine Wheeler Torrente, Philadelphia, PA; Colin Wheeler, Harrisburg, PA; Amy Rose and Emily Patricia Schieferstine, both of Vernon, NY and Christian Patrick Snyder, Fort Mill, SC; a sister, Mary Susan Snyder, Bridgeport, NY; brother and sister-in-law, John and Doris Snyder, Cooksville, TN; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, James and Bill Snyder.
Funeral services will be held at 3pm Thursday, August 4, 2011 from the Kloster-Northrop & Bentz Funeral Home, 210 E. Main St., Waterville.
Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Thursday from 1-3pm prior to the service.
Interment with full military honors will be held at 11AM Friday, August 5, in St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Groton, NY.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory are requested to the ALS Center at SUNY Upstate Medical University, Dept. of Neurology, 750 E. Adams St., Syracuse, NY 13210.
