Wallace Sydney Thompson, 81, passed away Sunday June 6, 2010 in Hamilton, NY.
Wally was born in Waterbury, CT. In 1928, and grew up in Valley Stream Long Island where he was a standout athlete (football and track) and musician (drums and vocals) at Central High School. Wally continued his passion for sports and music overseas while stationed in Germany with the Army 1948-50 and returned home to marry his high school sweetheart, Joan Graver in December 1950. Throughout the 50’s Wally continued to play football with the semi-pro Long Island Bears and played music with various dance bands around metro New York and Long Island. He was co- founder of the Green Hornets youth football program in Valley Stream and later founded the Valley Stream Comets, the first all girls track team on Long Island. Wally was the first president of the Gotham Aquatic association swim club. Professionally, Wally had a very successful career in the food industry in which he worked from 1950 through 1985. An avid sports fan and fisherman throughout his life, Wally became a mainstay at most Colgate and Hamilton High School sporting events upon his arrival to Hamilton in 1982. His love of fishing and enthusiasm for kids motivated him to create the Lake Moraine fishing derby which he ran for several years until his health declined. Well known for his relentless sense of humor, genuine passion for life and love of people, Wally was a man who truly enjoyed life to the fullest and went out of his way to help others do the same. He will truly be missed.
He is survived by his wife Joan, a sister Delores, a brother Ron, two children and four grandchildren.
In keeping with his wishes, services and burial are private. There will be no calling hours.
