William E. “Bill” Arthur, 89, of Sauquoit (Town of Paris) passed away Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Utica, the result of injuries suffered in an auto accident on June 21, 2016 while on his way to present a program on stamp collecting.
He was born June 9, 1927 in Herkimer, a son of William E. and Celia Lowell Arthur and was a graduate of Herkimer High School in 1945. From 1945 to 1946, he served in the U.S. Army, and then attended the Rochester Business Institute. William was married to the former Evelyn Dexter for 46 years until she predeceased him. On August 25, 2001, he married Beverley Ball Joyce Brockley in Sauquoit. Bill had worked at Savage Arms in Utica, Bendix Aviation in Utica, General Dynamics Electronics in Rochester, and retired from Eastman Kodak in 1985. Following his retirement, he returned to the Herkimer area where he became very active in the community. He loved to travel, especially taking cruises with Beverley several times a year. He was a life-long stamp collector who belonged to clubs in Utica, Rochester and Herkimer. In his later years, Bill developed a passion for landscaping and building terraces. He also enjoyed logging, cutting and splitting firewood.
Surviving are his wife, Beverley; a son William E. Arthur, III of Methuen, MA; step-children, Eric Lee and Debbie Joyce of West Winfield; Karl Gordon and Stephanie Joyce of Newark, NY; and Candace Marie Joyce Jones of Phoenix, AZ; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, October 15, 2016 from the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home (Kloster & Northrop Memorial Chapel), 210 E. Main St., Waterville, NY.
Interment with military honors will be private at the convenience of his family in the Mohawk Village Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to a favorite charity.
