OBITUARY

DONALD E. HAZARD

Waterville: Donald E. Hazard, 79, of Waterville passed away Saturday, April 5, 2014 at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Utica.
He was the son of Kenneth and Sarah “Sally” (Henry) Hazard of North Brookfield, both deceased. On March 25, 1967 he married Rory Elliott of Waterville who predeceased him on January 11, 2001.
Donald attended the North Brookfield School, and then Waterville High School. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard at 17 and served throughout the Pacific Theater including Korea, Guam and six months on Wake Island on air and sea rescue duties. He was a member of the American Legion for over 55 years.
Upon his discharge in 1954, he was employed as a postal clerk in Waterville before joining G.L.F., and later, Agway Petroleum as a delivery truck driver and an “on the job” driver trainer. In 1966, he was selected to teach, and later manage, the Agway Driving School in Syracuse. He was the fleet manager for Agway Energy Services and was instrumental in the development and oversight of their driver contract hauler program throughout the Northeast. During this time he also represented Agway at the Private Truck Council of America in Washington, DC, serving on its Board of Directors and as National Chairman of the Safety Committee.
Donald is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and James Kelly of Rome; a son Kenneth Hazard of Waterville; daughters and sons-in-law, Yvonne and Harold Coe, and Donna Magnotta, all of Oldsmar, FL and Richard Magnotta of Liverpool; Janice and John Miller of Syracuse; Nichelle (Nicki) and Brian Suba of Waterville; 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brothers-in-law, Garth Elliott; John Elliott and wife, Linda; Robert (Rip) Elliott and wife, Judy, Daniel Elliott and wife, Nancy; and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves his good friend Evelyn Plows of Brookfield. He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Betty Anne Hazard; two grandsons, Graham Peter and Jesse Peter Miller; and a sister-in-law, Sandy Elliott.
In keeping with Donald’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or services, and cremation took place shortly following his passing.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the Waterville Public Library.
