Mary H. Moryl

May 29, 1934 — September 7, 2019

Mary H. Moryl, 85, of Sherburne, NY passed away Saturday, September 7, 2019 peacefully at home.
Mary was born in Otselic, NY on May 29, 1934 to James R. and Pearle B. (Cole) Curns. She was known to many as “Whitey” in her youth due to her natural platinum blonde hair. The family moved to Smyrna in 1950 and she graduated from Sherburne Central School class of 1952. She married John J. Moryl on April 7, 1956, a marriage of 54 years. He predeceased her in 2010. Mary was employed by Curns and Sons Lumber Company as a bookkeeper and truck driver; Standard Brands and TACO of Sherburne and Norwich Pharmaceuticals. She was the first female bus driver for Sherburne Central Schools, a job that she enjoyed for 33 years. She was also the school courier during that time until her retirement in 1997. She and husband John, with the help of family and friends, built their home on School Street.
Mary enjoyed many activities and driving was her forte! Mary drove her brother’s stock cars in “Powder Puff” derbies winning two first place trophies in 1953, one at Brookfield Speedway and one at Columbian Speedway. She was a member of the Sherburne Fire Department Auxiliary, Snow Hoppers Snowmobile Club, the American Rifle Association and was a Girl Scout leader for many years. Most recently, her greatest pleasures came from spending time with her family. She also enjoyed watching “Gunsmoke”, and Syracuse Basketball.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Michael Seymour of Sherburne; her granddaughter and significant other, Tammie Carpenter and Jon Gower of Liverpool; her great-grandchildren, Dalton Jones and Kelsey Carpenter of Sherburne; brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Annette Moryl of Norwich; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings and their spouses, Stella (Curns) and Barney Hubbell, Rosella “Rosie” (Curns) and Milton Brown, R. Dale and Helen Curns, Ben and Margaret “Polly” Curns.
In keeping with her wishes, there will be no funeral service or calling hours.
Family and friends are welcome to attend the graveside service at 6pm Friday, September 13, 2019 in the Willcox Cemetery, 530 County Rd. 14, Earlville (Town of Smyrna).
Anyone who knew her would know that Friday the 13th, Full Moon (which only occurs every 20 years) is the perfect time for the service. She would have laughed, said “What the hell, why not” and cracked another joke or two! This will be a time to gather and share stories, so please come as you are, comfortable and warm!
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Willcox Cemetery Assoc., 18 School St., Sherburne, NY 13460; the Sherburne Emergency Squad, PO Box 924, Sherburne, NY 13460; the American Heart Assoc., www.heart.org; or to a charity of your choice.
