Stuart E. DeLand, 101 1/2, passed away on Friday, November 5, 2021, at Crouse Community Center in Morrisville, NY. He was born in Deansboro, NY on April 7, 1920, a son of the late Earl and Leona (Turner) DeLand, and received his education in Morrisville Schools. Stuart worked in the family business as a machinist. On January 3, 1943, in West Eaton, he was united in marriage to Virginia E. Smith. He served his country honorably during WWII in the U.S. Army Air Corps. On his return, the couple lived in Syracuse, where Stuart worked for Carrier Co. and he started an auto repair shop on the side. They later returned to West Eaton to raise their family, and Stuart opened an auto repair and machine shop. In 1961, Stuart moved his business, DeLand’s Garage, to Pine Woods. When he retired, his son, Paul, continued to operate the business. He was a devoted Christian and long-term member of the West Eaton Baptist Church, where heserved as deacon and trustee. He was a board member of Shiloh Christian Family Camp and taught youth programs at Awana and Christian Education Release Time (CERT). Stuart enjoyed volunteering in the community, going for rides on his motorcycle, traveling, camping and hunting in the Adirondacks, spending time with his family, and teaching his grandsons how to drive. Surviving are his sister, Doris Heuter of Hamilton; children: son, Paul (Mary) DeLand of Madison; daughters, Susan (John) Herring of Eaton and Rebecca Ecker of Fort Collins, CO; grandchildren: Aaron (Sarah) DeLand of Eaton, Adam (Ashley) DeLand of China Grove, NC, Drew (fiancée, Lindsay Taylor) DeLand of Madison; Jason (Sue) Herring of Honeoye Falls, David (Nicola) Herring of Lancaster, PA, Ryan (Deb) Herring of Lima; Gavin (Jamie) Ecker of Fort Collins, CO; great-grandchildren: Charles and Catherine DeLand; Braxton DeLand; Leah, Evan, and Nathan Herring; Simon Herring; Tyler Vasko and Lily Herring; Ella Ecker; and several in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins.He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 72 years, Virginia; a grandson, Justin DeLand; a sister, Ruth McMahon; and two brothers, Willard and Gordon DeLand.Services will be held Thursday, November 11, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. at the West Eaton Baptist Church. Friends are invited and may call on Thursday from 11:00 a.m to 1:00 p.m. at the church. Interment will follow the church service in the West Eaton Cemetery.Contributions in Mr. DeLand’s memory may be made to Shiloh Christian Family Camp or New Life Christian School. Envelopes will be available at the service.
